Chapter Eight: Decision

_______ stared down at her phone and decided that it was time to make two important phone calls. She was still unsure of whom she was going to choose, but she knew she had all the information that she needed, and it didn’t make sense to keep Francis and Arthur waiting. She picked up the small device and dialed the Frenchman’s number. It only rang twice before the Frenchman answered.

“______! I miss you, amie*! Is something wrong?” The girl smiled, it was nice to hear his voice again, even if she saw him two days ago.

“Hello to you too, Francis. Nothing’s wrong at all, I’m fine. I was calling because I need to see you tomorrow in the woods at about ten in the morning.” The Frenchman smiled, but a thought soon entered his mind.

“Just the two of us?” _____ sighed. It would be best to tell him in advance so they don’t kill each other on sight tomorrow.

“No, Arthur will be there.” Francis sighed, for he knew what that meant. She was deciding. He did have a fifty percent chance, and he hoped the odds would teeter in his favor. But…the other half of chance could go in the Brit’s favor. He would have to live with knowing ____ was taken by another man, that she loved someone else. He shook his head quickly. It was best not to think bad thoughts. If _____ chose Arthur, he would just have to deal with it. ______’s happiness gained priority over his.

“Thanks for telling me. Is that all?”
“Yes.” They exchanged goodbyes and hung up. ______ then dialed Arthur. Just like with Francis, it only rang a few times before Arthur answered.

“Poppet! It’s so nice to hear from such a lovely lady.”

“Thanks, Arthur, but…I just saw you.”

“Yes, that’s right. Hey…I’m sorry about the end. I didn’t mean to scare you or anything, but I simply cannot control myself as well as I used to. Sorry.” The girl smiled at the apology.

“I understand and I completely forgive you, I know it’s not your fault. Anyways, I’d like you to meet Francis and me in the woods tomorrow at ten in the morning. They’re by his house.” The Brit reacted much like Francis: he sighed. He, too, understood that _______ was choosing and that he would most likely lose to the Frenchman. He didn’t like to think bad thoughts, but he didn’t feel like he was good enough for _____. He felt like no matter how much he loved her, he wouldn’t be as good as Francis was.

“Yes, of course, love. I’ll see you tomorrow.” The Brit hung up immediately, not because he was trying to be rude, but he felt his sanity begin to slip. ______ was supposed to be his. No one else’s. _____ sighed softly, knowing what Arthur’s abrupt disappearance meant exactly. She set her phone down and prepared for bed. It was good thing that vampires didn’t need to sleep, because _____ had a feeling she wasn’t going to get any that night.

xXx

Francis was laying in bed, snuggling with his best friend, ______’s pillow. It was the only source of comfort he found without her actually being here. He inhaled the scent and smiled. Perhaps tomorrow night he’d be holding her close to him again. Maybe even cooking for her like he’d hoped. Maybe she’d be at Arthur’s house, doing a whole slew of ungodly things with him. His eyebrows knitted together at the thought, but he reminded himself again of ______ being happy. That, and that alone, would bring him true happiness. He wouldn’t dare say that there was some other vampire out there for him other than ______, but what if it was true? What if he just wasn’t mean to be with the woman he loved so dearly? He snuggled deeper into the pillow with many thoughts flowing through his mind. He needed to settle down, and he felt like now was the perfect time. He was over a hundred years old. He was past his days of fooling around, he wanted to share his life with someone. He wanted to share his life with _______. Is that what Arthur wanted?

The Frenchman turned over, trying to force himself to go to sleep. But that thought kept placating him. What if he had misjudged Arthur? If Arthur really just wanted to put the past behind him and settle down, all Francis’ hatred was meaningless. Maybe the Brit was worthy of his forgiveness. Francis shook his head in the dark. No one should be forgiven for something like that. They should instead be punished. Francis had never really been a violent or mean person, but he did want to cause Arthur pain. He could not lie. Arthur didn’t deserve ______, but then again, neither did he. But, they both loved her so dearly. It was truly a competition between the two at this point, but alas, it had always been. Francis just hoped that it would be him who took the prize home with him.

xXx

Arthur had a feeling that he wasn’t going to be the one _____ chose. He wished that he had control of his vampiric desires, for he didn’t want to hurt _____ by any means. He wanted her to be happy, but he also wanted her to be happy with him. In the depths of the black demon’s heart that possessed Arthur’s, that took priority over her happiness. Arthur had never been one to put himself first until after his accident. He always thought of others. He always wanted to be a good friend, son, or anything else someone wanted, or needed, him to be. He didn’t want to be the one that broke an innocent girl’s heart because of his blind rage.

He tried to pull himself away from those types of thoughts. He tried to remind himself that if ______ didn’t choose him that only meant there was someone better. But, at this point in time, Arthur didn’t think there was anyone else better. ______ was just too perfect. He (h/l), (h/c) locks, shining (e/c) eyes, and such a beautiful smile. He didn’t want to be the one that destroyed her innocence.  But, oh, did the demon that had haunted him for so long desire that very thing. The true ways of a vampire are extremely dark and selfish. Only think about yourself, no one else is of any importance. He didn’t want to be like that. In the end, he almost hoped that ____ wouldn’t choose him for her safety. But, alas, true vampires didn’t care about anyone but themselves.

xXx

Francis stood in the large field surrounded by trees. It was 9:30, for he wanted to be there if _____ did decide to show up early. He was adorned in his normal clothing: ponytail, jeans, sneakers, and a red T-shirt. The T-shirt matched his eyes, for he had been burning with emotions ever since he got up that morning. Today was the day that ______ would choose between him and his lifelong rival. He was a walking bundle of nerves.

Unbeknownst to Francis, the said rival was entering the woods right now. The Frenchman had been so nervous that he was beginning to lose his senses. Much like Francis, Arthur was nothing but nerves. He was terrified that something would go wrong. He was terrified that he would hurt _____ and one of his most valued friends. It was a one-sided friendship, but Arthur still believed it could be mended with some work. He eventually made his way to the clearing only to find a scarlet eyed vampire. Good, he wasn’t the only one. The Frenchman turned around finally feeling someone enter. Once he saw the blonde-haired, currently-red-eyed man. He glared daggers and marched up to him. Arthur’s darker side felt the need to attack after being stared down so dirtily, but he refused the urge and stood his ground.

“Arthur Kirkland. It’s been a while, a long, long, long while since we last crossed paths. How long has it been since 1922? Ninety-two years? Yes. And of course, the first time we meet again is when you form a line of attraction with my predestined mate! Everything was going well! We were going to make love that night! She was to be mine that night! How convenient that you just happened to walk in, stare in her eyes, and fall completely in love with her!” The Frenchman breathed heavily, trying to restrain himself from doing any serious damage. “I know I should have finished it about two weeks earlier. But, Arthur. Ninety-two years!? Ninety-two years and this happens?!” The Frenchman put his face in his hands. Not really wanting to fight his rival unless completely necessary. The Brit looked down, sad that it was all truth that Francis spoke.

“I’m glad I decided to come early. It gives us a chance to talk. You have every right to be cross with me after not coming back and trying to mend things a while ago. But, I cannot control who I form a line of attraction with! So, please, don’t blame me for that. Don’t think I didn’t hate myself more for liking _____, because I sure as hell did. I wanted to become friends again, not enemies. I’m sorry that this happened. But, I can’t rewrite the past. If I could, I would’ve a long time ago. Not only did I lose you as my friend, but I also lost the ability to control my vampiric desires. I know what I did was wrong, but please forgive me. Gilbert and Antonio already have. Why can’t you? How were you affected more than them? You don’t know what it’s like to be born a vampire, to live off of blood your whole life without knowing why, to suddenly be sent away by the only two people who ever loved you, to destroy every ounce of happiness you ever felt with a single act. Don’t act like you’re perfect, like you don’t have any fault, Francis. I’d like to have your friendship, but I won’t demand it.” Francis blinked. He really did have a lot to be thankful for. He had a superb childhood before he was turned. He was happy in Paris and did everything any other child did. Arthur didn’t have that.

“I don’t know…if we can ever be friends like we were, but I know we can be civil,” Francis held out his hand to the Brit. Arthur smiled and shook it hastily. “Listen, Arthur, no matter what happens today. We must continue to mend whatever we can of our relationship. I’m so sorry for my selfishness and the hell I put you through. No matter who _____ chooses, we should continue to mend our broken relationship.” Arthur nodded.

“I agree.” After the two finished making up, their eyes began to clear and return to their natural shade of blue and green. _______ soon came through the woods. She was dressed in a (f/c) sundress and her hair was held back in a ponytail. She walked in to find the men engaged in a…nice conversation. No insults, no put-downs, no death threats. Did such an event really exist? They both turned to her once she cleared her throat to speak.

“Good morning, boys.” She smiled happily, for she felt so, so happy to be rid of all the conflicting thoughts, the scarlet eyes that stayed for days, and especially the guilt of thinking they would tear each other’s throats out no matter whom she chose. “I see you guys are doing well today, did I miss something? I’ve only seen together once and I seriously thought you were going to kill each other.”

“We’ve decided to salvage and mend our relationship, and no matter what happens today, we will commit ourselves to it.” Francis spoke up.

“I’m glad to hear it. Now, I won’t be suspenseful and hang it over your head. I’ll just tell you. First, give me a moment to find out, though.” The both nodded and _____ made a movement with her hands showing that she wanted the two to spread out so that they were far away from each other.

Once they were a distance away, ______ stared intently at Arthur, recalling all the times they’d shared. The kiss, the phone call, his story, his true feelings, his outburst of rage, now. She began to do something that she had been doing a lot the last few weeks: weighing the pros and cons. Pros: he was sweet, he cared for her, he loved her, he was compassionate even in his outburst. Cons: he can’t control himself which could lead to her demise, he was possessive, she didn’t love him the way he loved her, but only as a friend. The last one stood in her mind. Love. Quite an interesting thing it was. Her eyes left the green orbs of the confused Brit and landed on Francis. She recalled all of her memories, which started about three years ago. The first meeting in the café, the first outing they went on, their friendship, his reveal and his confession, the bite that still scarred her neck, her hunger, him training her, his hate for Arthur, Antonio’s villa, the picnic, now. She then proceeded to weigh the pros and cons. Pros: undying love for her, gentle, very caring, she loved him. Again, love. Cons: possessive, grudge-holder…she stopped weighing things as her heart began to pound. She loved him. Bad and good didn’t really seem to matter anymore. She loved him. She wanted to be with him and only him. She felt her eyes change, revealing the shining (e/c) that had been hiding during this whole ordeal. Her eyes only continued to bore into the blue of her love’s. She ran full-force at him, and, yes, at her vampiric speed as well. The Frenchman smiled brightly and opened his arms. Arthur smiled in the background. He felt a calm wash over him despite the fact that ____ did not choose him. She was happy. That’s all he really wanted. _____ had crashed into the Frenchman’s arms and the pair was now wrapped in a tight embrace.

“I’ll catch up with you lovebirds later, don’t break anything tonight.” He received a glare from both as he walked out of their woods leaving them to become full mates, to unite the most inseparable bond that earth had ever seen. The female snuggled into her love’s arms wanting him to wrap her completely in his love.

“I love you, Francis. I’ll tell you every day. I love you, so much. I’m so glad everything worked out.” She tucked her head into his chest and he stroked her hair softly.

“I love you, too, ma cheré*. I’ll make you ma femme* soon.”

    xXx

The pair had spent the rest of the day getting all of ____’s stuff from Antonio’s villa. They chatted with Gilbert, Antonio, and Lizzy. Arthur called with the news that he decided that he was going to move to their location within the next few years. Everything was shifting into place. _____ was sitting at the dining table, waiting for whatever dessert Francis was bringing in. He had held true to his promise and cooked for _____.

“Lastly, for this evening’s meal, crème brûlée.” He placed the dish in front of her and stared at her happily. It felt so good to know that she would be by his side forever. She wasn’t going to run away ever again. She took a bite.

“This is really good, you should cook every night. Wow!” The female was a good cook herself, but she couldn’t even compare to a chef directly from France. He watched her enjoy the dessert and they carried on pleasant conversation.

When _____ finished, she decided to clean the kitchen, seeing how Francis had cooked everything. She had finished putting all the food away and was now washing the dishes. The Frenchman snuck up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling them flush against one another. He sighed and pushed her hair over to bury his face in her neck. He pushed back her hair to find the bite on her neck. His bite. His eyes reddened and he felt him begin to slip into his vampiric self. ______ didn’t notice though, she was simply washing the dishes while her mate snuggled with her. Well, that’s what she thought. Once she finished washing the dishes, _______ was thrown roughly over a certain vampire’s shoulder.

“Francis!? What the hell is wrong with you?!” He merely remained silent as he began to trudge up the stairs with her on his shoulder. He threw open the door to their shared bedroom and threw her on the bed, but still made sure she was safe. “What are you doing?” She asked timidly, already knowing full well what was about to happen.

“My sweet, innocent ______. Pure as a white rose. I’m going to finish this process, my dear.”

Okie dokie. This is the decision. The sooner I finish this series, the sooner I can do the requests and the sooner I can finish my other ones.
